they were there to steal the show, and they nearly did from the tough lead-off
spot.
GREAT stuff!

Tomato Can

INCREDIBLE Keyboard and Guitar virtuosity
set loose by the 'in the pocket' groove
laid down by this group of accomplished musicians
made
Tomato Can a
STRONG contender.
There's YOUTH on the guitar and keyboards here,
and their virtuosity belies their ages.
Man, these kids can PLAY!

Irving Street Blues Band

This young band
just keeps getting better and
better. The addition of the Hammond Organ
made for an entirely new sound from this
High School-aged and TALENTED bunch. Once hard edges are now becoming
nicely polished as their experience grows!! They put on a GREAT set!

The DelCats

It was another
barn-burning performance by this OUTSTANDING gem of a local blues band that
combines the best in songwriting with incredible talent at each instrument.
And those horns, a GREAT live addition and evidence that the boys were pulling
out ALL the stops. It was nothing short of seven pieces of Smokin'
Mojo from The Cats!

(The DelCats new CD
above is nothing short
of outstanding!!)

Nuthin' But Trouble

And Nuthin' But
Trouble it was, for every other
band in this competition. Hard driving blues by a
talented bunch in their first DSBS appearance.
I think we'll be hearing more from

The long awaited first CD from this BURNIN' Blues Band from Rehoboth Beach,
Delaware!!

Jake and the boys,
in their second DSBS Battle,
shined like the Sun, evidencing their polished musicianship born from the play
every day rigors
this band has been blessed with of late. They've
been honing their mighty skills in clubs all over
the region, and put on a set for DSBS attendees
worthy of the Blues Challenge win. So DSBS
is going to get them to Memphis, and stick a couple
of bucks in their pockets so they can represent
all of US, and maybe bring home the gold
in the Blues Foundation's International
Blues Challenge in February.
Go get 'em, guys!!

The
Buicks

The
Buicks are producing their first LIVE CD from sets at
PUCKS in Doylestown, PA recorded on JULY 28th!!
The Buicks came to
play, and play they did, with a
blistering set, meant to set the previous six
bands on their ears!! And they nearly
pulled it off!! Smooth and polished, these adept musicians burned through
their set, leaving all in attendance shouting for more.
It was an OUTSTANDING
Battle of the Bands, with each band utilizing their
own original material.
Collectively, they burned down the house, pure and simple, in the best of
a long tradition of Blues in these
United States.
THANK YOU ALL
for
joining us and making this
day of outstanding
music a success.
And a BIG
THANK YOU also, to the
Seven Local / Regional Bands who
competed. They
were, each and every one of them, simply
outstanding
in both the quality of their songwriting and
also their extremely high level
of musicianship.
Our hats are off to
you all!!

Artist
KENNY
NEAL
Kenny Neal stands tall among the
younger generation of blues players. His trademark brand of blues,
featuring a combination of Louisiana swamp blues, funky rhythms and
soul-deep vocals, powered by his slashing guitar playing and--on his
solo albums--loping harmonica, puts him at the forefront of contemporary
blues players.
Born October 14, 1957 into a
deeply rooted multi-generational blues family from Baton Rouge,
Louisiana, Kenny's been playing the blues since he was a small child. He
first learned the blues from his father, harpist Raful Neal, and family
friends like Buddy Guy, Lazy Lester and Slim Harpo. It was Slim who gave
Kenny his first harp, trying to pacify the crying three-year-old boy. It
worked. Kenny mastered harmonica, and quickly moved on to bass, trumpet,
piano and guitar. He first performed at age six, playing piano at one of
his father's gigs. By the time he was 13, he officially joined his
father's band as a bass player, before being recruited as Buddy Guy's
bassist at 17. Following Buddy's advice to concentrate on his guitar
playing, Kenny relocated to Toronto, and--along with his brothers Raful
Jr., Noel, Larry and Ronnie--formed the Neal Brothers Band, regularly
backing visiting blues stars. Later he fronted Canada's Downchild Blues
band before returning to Baton Rouge to begin his solo career.
Teaming with producer/bassist/horn
arranger Bob Greenlee in 1987, Kenny cut a series of albums featuring
not only his laid-back, Baton Rouge blues, but also funky contemporary
gems with a taste of rock and R&B. Kenny joined Alligator in 1988, and
his albums became blues hits, with the critics hailing him as one of the
best of the younger blues generation. Down Beat declared, "Neal
has a contemporary style unto himself, his phrases flare with pointed
feeling and fervid imagination, his singing is randy and exuberant."
He's played with major blues stars
from B.B. King to Buddy Guy, and has emerged as one of the few names on
the short list of current blues greats. His music is deeply rooted in
the Louisiana swamp blues tradition, but burns with a contemporary fire.
"One of a mere handful of truly inventive young contemporary
guitarists," announced the Chicago Tribune, "Neal has something
fresh to say and the chops with which to say it."

CHUBBY

Popa Chubby, "Stealing the Devil's Guitar" (Blind
Pig) ***
Chicago Sun Times
Fans of Popa Chubby's take-no-prisoners approach to the blues, rock and
even hip-hop as played by "The King of New York City Blues" and his
bone-crunching power trio might be taken aback by the more sophisticated
arrangements and instrumentation for "Stealing the Devil's Guitar." Why,
he even plays some mandolin and acoustic guitar on his sixth release for
Blind Pig Records, and there are hints of Eastern rhythms.
Fear not, though: Popa Chubby is not going soft. The Bronx, N.Y., native
known in some circles as Ted Horowitz still does his share of guitar
raveups that hark back to '70s blues-rock outfits such as Foghat and
Savoy Brown. Chubby's writing is particularly strong here, as with
"Smugglers Game," "Slide, Devil Man, Slide" and "Preacher Man." Among
the best of the 11 tracks is the lone cover: Mississippi Hill Country
blues icon Jessie Mae Hemphill's "In This World."

About The
Larry McCray Band |
Larry McCray is one of a handful of
talented young blues performers leading the genre across
boundaries and into the new century. McCray's savage blues-rock
guitar and warm, soulful vocals have drawn attention worldwide.
McCray's hard work paid off when he became the first artist
signed by Virgin Records' blues division - Pointblank Records.
In 1990, they released his debut, "Ambition," which was well
received by the U.S. and European press.
1993 saw the release of McCray's second album, Delta Hurricane,
which was recorded in Memphis with the notoriously funky Uptown
Horns. The guitarist's gut wrenching rendition of Warren Haynes'
power ballad, "Soul Shine," opened many ears to McCray's talent
and diversity.
In 1998, Born To Play The Blues moved the story of McCray's
broadly appealing music forward another giant step. Bold,
brawny, often dazzling guitar lines are matched with confident,
soul-drenched vocals. Understated funk rhythms and crunchy rock
riffs meet searing slow blues and booty-bumping shuffles.
The year 2000 found the guitarist co-establishing his own
independent record company together with Koch, forming Magnolia
Records. The release Believe It kicked it off, putting McCray on
chart to continue to release albums on his own dime and time,
without the business or rules of a pressing-type of label.
McCray also sights a career highlight as being honored as the
Orville Gibson 2000 Male Blues Guitarist of the Year. "Jeff
Beck, Eric Clapton, like seven or eight other people were
nominated, as well" stated McCray.
With Magnolia Records his new home and a young son to raise,
McCray was able to pull back into his personal life for a while.
McCray keeps busy on the road trying to find the time to write
music.
Magnolia Records released the McCray's first live album, Live On
75, on December 6, 2005. A new studio album is to follow in late
2006.
